What is Shurtrax

FAQ's

What happens when the water in my ShurTrax freezes?

ShurTrax is durable enough to expand and contract during the normal freezing and thawing that occurs at and temperatures below 32°F (0°C). We advise the consumer to fill ShurTrax with no more than 3 inches (7.5 cm) of water as stated in the product manual, allowing sufficient room for expansion. The material is rated to withstand outdoor temperatures as low as -40°F (-40°C).

Can I use antifreeze in my ShurTrax?

ShurTrax is designed to handle the expansion of frozen water when temperatures get below freezing and is designed to stay in place through the winter. However, if you expect that you may need to be able to remove it, you can add biodegradable RV antifreeze (the pink stuff), adding approximately ½ gallon (2 liters) to a SUV/CUV/Auto ShurTrax, 2 gallons (7.6 L) to a Compact truck ShurTrax, and 3 gallons to a Full-Size pickup ShurTrax. The water in the ShurTrax may get slushy but should not freeze solid.

Will ShurTrax control "axle or wheel hop"?

Yes, very effectively. Adding 400 lbs. (181 kg) of weight to a half-, three-quarter or one-ton pickup will reduce axle or wheel hop.

How can I justify the cost of ShurTrax?

With proper care, ShurTrax products should last up to 5 years. Even at a typical hardware stores low price of around $4 for a 50-lb (23 kg) bag of tube sand, 8 bags per year will cost you $160+ over 5 years, which is more than ShurTrax. ShurTrax comes with a no-hassle three-year warranty. The only thing not covered is damage from punctures or abuse.

How much weight does ShurTrax add to the vehicle?

Water weighs approximately 8 lbs./gallon (1 kg/L). This product is sized so the 3-inch (7.5 cm) suggested fill level will provide the following weight: SUV/CUV/Auto = 100 lbs. (45 kg); Mid-Size/Compact Pickup= 320 lbs. (145 kg); Full-Size Pickup= 400 lbs. (180 kg). However, the consumer can adjust the total weight by adjusting the water level from 1-3 inches without harming the product.

Can I haul cargo on top of my ShurTrax?

Yes, the product is rated to withstand up to 500 lbs. (227 kg) of flat-lying cargo. Do not place sharp or pointed objects on top of the ShurTrax as they could cause cuts or punctures, which are not covered under warranty. Always be sure to check cargo for protruding nails, screws, staples, or other sharp and pointed objects or surfaces before placing on top of the ShurTrax.

Will ShurTrax slide around?

The weight of the water, combined with slosh-reducing baffles and the low-profile design of ShurTrax, are enough to keep ShurTrax in place. However, ShurTrax may gradually "inch forward" during braking if not secured in place. Sturdy grommets have been molded into the design to allow you to strap or bolt your ShurTrax in place. Tarp straps are included with some packages, and available as a kit on www.shurtrax.com. We strongly encourage you to secure the ShurTrax to prevent unwanted movement over time.

How durable is the material?

ShurTrax consists of two layers of material. The inner layer is a smooth water-resistant material molded together using RF (Radio Frequency) technology for a super high-quality seal. The outer layer consists of a very tough rot-, mildew-, and tear-resistant vinyl reinforced with nylon mesh. It is designed for extended exposure to the elements, including ambient temperatures as low as -40°F (-40°C).

Does ShurTrax have seams?

ShurTrax is designed with one continuous seal, avoiding seams that can split or tear.

What are the baffles for?

ShurTrax is designed using multiple interconnected compartments to simplify filling and draining. These compartments feature baffles so that water can’t suddenly surge or slosh between compartments. This prevents sudden weight shifts during acceleration, braking, and turning. Please note that parking a vehicle with ShurTrax on a hill or slope for an extended period of time can cause the water in ShurTrax to shift toward the downhill side and freeze in that position if temperatures drop below 32°F/0°C. We recommend parking on a flat surface if possible when temperatures are expected to fluctuate above and below freezing or using a biodegradable antifreeze.

What other uses are there for ShurTrax products?

Many of our satisfied customers report improvements in ride, handling, and vehicle leveling, as well as improved off-road traction and better control of axle or wheel hop. Customers have also reported using ShurTrax to transport water for vacation, industrial, agricultural, and commercial purposes. Although ShurTrax can be used for the storage and transportation of water, it is not approved for use with drinking water (water is not potable).
